ALS Lingap Kalikasan
1,226 hands simultaneously planted 3,242 fruit and hardwood trees at different Community Learning Centers in General Santos City last March 30, 2012 in support to the DepEd Order no. 3 series of 2012 or otherwise known as National Tree Planting Program of the Alternative Learning System (ALS Lingap Kalikasan).
The tree planting activity was spearheaded by Sir Gregorio O Ruales, Education Program Supervisor for Alternative Learning System, together with the District ALS Coordinators, Mobiles Teachers, Instructional Managers, Facilitators, Service Providers, Purok and Barangay Officials, Local Government Unit, partner agencies, Learners and their families.
Before the conduct of the activity, initial visitation to the identified areas, identification of right trees to be planted and coordinating with the stakeholders were conducted to insure the efficient implementation of the activity. The District ALS Coordinators who served as one of the team leaders acted as the lead advocate and whom requested the seedlings to the partner agencies like CENRO. The location for the activity and hauling of the participants were provided by the Purok and Barangay Officials of the city.
The program started at 5:00 o’clock in the morning where all the participants from different Community Learning Centers simultaneously planted their seedlings. The seedlings planted include Mahogany (1,505 pcs.), Avocado (106 pcs.), Neem Tree (315), Jackfruit (358), Narra (294), Guyabano (125), Indian Pine (150), Bamboo (55), Acacia (100), Mangrove (100), Start Apple (3), Guava (82), Pomelo (5), Ipil-Ipil (5), Coconut (25), Cardava (10), and Acli Tree (25).
The learners together with their family and the community were zealously planting together, one seedling at a time. “It is really fun planting especially when you are with your friends, we are not just attending this activity as a requirement but to help in lessening the treats of climate change” said by Hennie Mae Depeno, learner from Prk. 15, Lagao.
A certificate of participation was given to all the participants after the short closing program. “We already have experienced this drastic change of climate in our city, we are all affected and by that we should also act, and if every person in the world plant at least one tree, we can still stop this climate change” remarked by Gretchen Cabarlo, learner from South District CLC.
To sustain the tree growing, the team leaders will conduct a periodic monitoring on the status of the trees planted which will be submitted to the BALS Office. People in the community had committed to augment security of the growth of the trees and will also propagate advocacy in their respective Barangays.
Aside from planting of seedlings other activity were also simultaneously conducted like Feeding Program, Medical/Dental Mission, Clean-up Drive and Bloodletting.
